(Pittsburgh) -- The Pittsburgh-based chapter of the Easter Seals charity has temporarily laid off 22 workers due to the state budget impasse.

The lack of a spending plan is holding up $1.25 million in state funding for Easter Seals Western and Central Pennsylvania, which services people with disabilities and other special needs in 47 of the state's 67 counties.

If the budget impasse goes past Thursday, the agency will impose temporary wage cuts of up to 30 percent for its remaining employees.

Karen Kavic, vice president of development for the agency, says the layoffs and wage cuts will end once a state budget is approved and the state funding is restored.

The layoffs took effect Monday.

About 300 employees remain at the agency.

The state funding is about 13 percent of the agency's $9.7 million annual budget.
