Investigators and firefighters work the scene of a fire and shooting Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, in Philadelphia. A Pennsylvania state police trooper has been shot in the shoulder after a fiery crash along Interstate 676.

(Philadelphia) -- Pennsylvania State Police say a traffic stop on a downtown Philadelphia highway turned violent when a suspect got back into his car and fled, rear-ended a school bus and then shot at a trooper. Authorities say the officer was shot in the shoulder and the suspect was injured.

The suspect's car and the school bus both caught fire. Officials say there were no children on the bus.

Philadelphia Police Department spokeswoman Leeloni Palmiero says the trooper is hospitalized in stable condition. State police spokeswoman Maria Finn says the suspect wasn't injured in the exchange of gunfire, refuting an earlier report.

The encounter happened at about 9:30 a.m. on Interstate 676.

A passenger in the suspect's vehicle are also in custody.

Governor Wolf's office released this statement:

"My thoughts and prayers are with the Pennsylvania State Police Trooper shot on Interstate 676 in the line of duty today. I received an update from Acting Commissioner Blocker a short time ago and I am relieved to learn that the trooper is in stable condition at a hospital in Philadelphia. Our men and women in law enforcement put their lives on the line each day to protect us, and we owe them a debt of gratitude. The shooter was swiftly taken into custody by the Pennsylvania State Police. No further details are available at this time."
