"Our goal was not to fix the bridge; our goal was to remove the beam that was in danger of falling."

(Undated) -- Work on a damaged Route 30 overpass between Hellam Township and Wrightsville was completed and eastbound lanes reopened Wednesday night, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Greg Penny said.

Penny said the Burgs Lane overpass between Accomac Road and Cool Springs Road is expected to open midday Thursday.

On Monday evening, a truck trying to pass under the Burgs Lane overpass struck and damaged one beam, Penny said previously. The truck was carrying a backhoe, the top of which struck the beam.

All eastbound lanes of Route 30 between Hellam Township and Wrightsville were closed Tuesday because of the repairs, and drivers were rerouted at the Hellam exit onto Route 462, which took them to Lancaster by way of the Wrightsville Bridge. At the time, estimates for the Route 30 closure extended to Friday.

The detours clogged both Route 30 East and Route 462 East, causing major delays. On Wednesday morning, drivers could re-enter Route 30 East on Cool Springs Road in Wrightsville, and detours were not so busy as people changed their schedules or took other routes.

"It's not unusual for this to happen," Penny said of the crash. He added, "I think sometimes they (drivers) head off on their trucks without checking," the height of their loads.

In a news release on Wednesday, PennDOT stated that the contractor for PennDOT had removed the damaged bridge beam and that crews were breaking apart and cutting the beam into smaller pieces so that they could be removed and taken to a waste site.

"Our goal was not to fix the bridge; our goal was to remove the beam that was in danger of falling," Penny said Wednesday.

Penny estimated the repairs would cost "a couple hundred thousand dollars."
