(Undated) -- Repairs to an underpass between Hallam and Wrightsville on Route 30 that caused major traffic backups today could take up a majority of the week, according to PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny.

On Monday evening, a truck trying to pass under the Burgs Lane overpass between Accomac Road and Cool Springs Road struck and damaged one beam.

The truck was carrying a backhoe, the top of which struck the beam.

Hellam Township Police Chief Mark Sowers says the crash occurred about 5:00 p.m.

He adds there were no injuries in the crash and that the only vehicles involved were the truck and backhoe.

This morning, all eastbound lanes of Route 30 between Hallam and Wrightsville were closed after a bridge engineer determined the bridge needed repairs.

Kathy Miller, 54, of Hellam Township, was stuck in traffic on Kreutz Creek Road in Hellam Township. Miller said she was taking her granddaughter, Destiny Miller, 10, to Kreutz Creek Elementary School, where she is a fifth-grader.

"Oh wow, this is a mess," Kathy Miller said. "I've got to get her (her granddaughter) to school, but she's going to be late."

Kleon Zimmerman, of Lancaster, an electrician, was also on Kreutz Creek Road, having gotten off Route 30 because he was headed to the southern part of York County for an electrical job.

Zimmerman said he passed the damaged underpass before getting off the highway.

"I didn't look like nothing at all," he said. "I don't know what the deal is."

PennDOT is in the process of getting a private contractor to repair the overpass, Penny said. Penny estimated repairs to the bridge could take until Friday, although the date of completion was undetermined mid-morning Tuesday.

Traffic was rerouted off Route 30 at the Hellam exit onto Route 462, 911 confirmed. On Monday morning, traffic was backed up on Route 30 East, nearly until the Mount Zion Exit.

Some drivers taking the Mount Zion on-ramp to Route 30 noticed the snarled traffic, performed a three-point turn, and then drove the wrong way, back down the on-ramp to escape the back-up.

Drivers also took Route 462 east across the Wrightsville bridge and can re-enter Route 30 on the Lancaster County side via Route 441. On Monday morning, traffic on Route 462 east was backed up to Mount Zion Road. At Route 462 and Plesant Acres Road, traffic was pinched from two lanes to one.

Westbound Route 30 traffic was not affected by the repairs and lane closures.
