(New Florence) -- State police plan a news conference later today to discuss the fatal shooting of a western Pennsylvania police officer who responded to a domestic dispute.

Thirty-one-year-old Ray Shetler Jr. was under police guard at a hospital and charged with homicide in Saturday night's shooting of St. Clair Township Officer Lloyd Reed in Westmoreland County.

State police say the 54-year-old officer shot at Shetler when he wouldn't drop a hunting rifle.

Another officer also shot at the suspect, who ran away after allegedly shooting Reed and was found by police hours later with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Investigators say Shetler told them he didn't know Reed was an officer, but authorities say he identified himself.

Reed's funeral will be Friday at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown.
