Dad jailed in newborn's abuse now faces homicide charge

(Carlisle) -- A Cumberland County man already jailed on charges he physically abused his newborn son has now been charged with criminal homicide in the wake of the baby's death.

County District Attorney David Freed announced the new charge against 22-year-old John Howard-Bee.

The South Middletown man has been jailed on aggravated assault and other charges since his arrest earlier this month.

Authorities say Howard-Bee minimized his son's injuries, including multiple skull fractures, brain swelling, and hemorrhages "too numerous to count.'' The boy also had bruises on his buttocks, every rib broken and was malnourished.

Howard-Bee had been set for a preliminary hearing on the original charges on Wednesday but that was postponed after the baby died at Hershey Medical Center last week after two months in intensive care.

Online court records don't list a defense attorney.
