(Harrisburg) -- PennDOT is gearing up for the arrival of winter, which is less than a month away.

Secretary Leslie Richards says her agency and its fleet of snowplows and other equipment are ready to handlethe demands of the season.

Veteran snowplow operator Jeff Johnson reminds drivers who encounter a plow, especially when it's working to remove snow, should never attempt to pass it.

"Numerous trucks that have right sidewing plows and left sidewing plows sometimes in a snow event, they become...I don't want to say invisible...but, not clearly seen,' he says. "People run into them as they're trying to pass us."

Richards says PennDOT is responsible for more than 40,000 miles of state-maintained roadways, which the same number of miles as New York, New Jersey, and the New England states combined.
