(Elderton) -- Tom Smith, a conservative activist who ran unsuccessfully as the Republican nominee against U.S. Senator Bob Casey three years ago, is dead at age 67.

Smith had been ill before he died Saturday at his home outside Elderton, Armstrong County, said John Bauer with Bauer Funeral Home.

Visitation is at the family complex today and tomorrow, and the funeral is Wednesday at Mount Union Lutheran Church in Elderton.

Smith was a relative newcomer to statewide politics during his 2012 Senate run, after making a fortune in western Pennsylvania's coal mining industry.
