(Harrisburg) -- Pennsylvania is now providing easier online access to information about discipline of doctors and other professionals.

The state Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs is putting online records of more than 18,000 cases from the past seven years.

The bureau's website didn't previously provide certain details about the records, including why penalties were imposed.

Professionals can have their licenses revoked or suspended, or can be fined or reprimanded.

The penalties can come as a result of harmful or deceitful incidents or from something unrelated to the services they provide.

Bureau officials say the tool helps consumers make more informed decisions.
