(Annville ) -- Keep the popcorn on hold -- at least for now.

The Allen Theatre has announced that it will close, beginning Friday, July 31, until a yet determined date, according to its Facebook page.

The page indicated that owner, Allen "Skip" Hicks, was going on vacation, and conspicuously added that the theater, at 36-38 E. Main St., would get be getting something installed.

The Facebook page added that the adjoining café, MJ's Coffeehouse, will remain open at its regular hours -- Monday, 5 to 10 p.m.; Tuesday through Thrusday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Hicks said Thursday that he was meeting with renovators on Friday but was unable to comment on the specifics of the project, saying he did not want to misquote anything.

The Allen, a single-screen, 322-seat theater screens films on a 35-millimeter film projector and does not use a digital projector, according to a Lebanon Daily News article published in June. Most film distributors release new movies only on a digital platform, which limits the films the Allen can show.

Opened in 1995 after a three year remodeling campaign, the theater has shown first-run new releases as well as classic, silent films with accompaniment by live musicians. The theater and MJ's Coffeehouse also provide performance spaces for local musicians. The theater has been featured in Central PA Magazine and named by Moviefone.com as one of the 12 best local theaters in America.
