(Sunbury) -- A midstate newspaper is apologizing for publishing a letter to the editor that suggested President Barack Obama should be executed.

The Daily Item in Sunbury says in an editorial that it "bungled" the letter. The newspaper said editors should have deleted two paragraphs that it said were "inescapably an incitement to have the chief executive of our government executed."

The letter-writer criticized Obama's handling of the situation in Iraq and lamented the Islamic State group's takeover of Ramadi, Iraq.

The Daily Item says readers have reacted strongly to the letter, and that it embraces their calls for a higher standard for civil discourse.
