Former Hanover Police Chief Randy Whitson has passed away. He is pictured here in a photo taken at South Western High School in 2011.

Whitson retired on Feb. 3, 2013 after 37 years on the force.

"No matter what he did he did it for the community," Krebs said by phone. "His heart was there. He was a great friend. He was always there for everybody."

He was one of the YWCA Safe Home Program's advocates, and sat on the advisory board of YWCA Hanover. He often attended special events sponsored by Safe Home.

"Randy's challenged everybody in this department to be better," Chief Dwayne Smith said in a January 1, 2013 story for the Evening Sun. "I couldn't learn from a better individual than Randy."
