Seattle Seahawks' Garry Gilliam catches a touchdown pass during the second half of the NFL football NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers January 18. The Carlisle native is slated to speak at his alma mater, the Milton Hershey School, today.

(Undated) -- Students at the Milton Hershey School are hosting a special guest today.

Garry Gilliam of the Seattle Seahawks and a Carlisle native, plans to speak at his alma mater to offer some inspiration to students.

The 2009 grad tells WITF's Smart Talk attending Milton Hershey was challenging at first, because he was away from his family from a young age.

"Once I got that into my head, even at a young age, I realized you know what, this is definitely the best thing, not only for me, but my family," he says. "No one in my family had gone to college at that point, so for me to possibly be the first one was a huge thing."

Gilliam plans to talk about his time at the school, being away from his family, dealing with injuries at Penn State and life in the NFL.

He says he wants to teach the students to use challenging situations like stepping stones to take them where they want to go.

Watch the special assembly, "Perseverance through Adversity" at 7:45 a.m. today.
