(Washington) -- U.S. Capitol Police say a staff member for a midstate congressman has been arrested after carrying a handgun and magazine into the Cannon House Office building.

Ryan Shucard, press secretary for Republican Congressman Tom Marino, was arrested this morning.

A spokesman for Capitol Police say Shucard entered the Cannon building with a 9mm handgun and magazine that was discovered by a metal detector.

He's charged with a carrying a pistol without a license, a felony.

Bill Tighe, the congressman's chief of staff, says Shucard has been placed on unpaid leave.

Shucard started with Marino's office in May.

Marino's district includes portions of Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties.
