A hospital worker views police activity near the scene of a shooting at a wellness center attached to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby.

(Darby) -- A psychiatrist has told police a patient fatally shot a caseworker at a suburban Philadelphia hospital complex before the doctor pulled out his own gun and exchanged fire with the patient.

Delaware District Attorney Jack Whelan says Dr. Lee Silverman was grazed in the temple during the gunfight with patient Richard Plotts.

The caseworker killed at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital on Thursday afternoon was Theresa Hunt of Philadelphia.

Authorities say she had accompanied Plotts to an appointment with Silverman at a psychiatric crisis center next to the hospital in Darby, just southwest of Philadelphia.

Whelan says Plotts was in surgery Thursday evening at a Philadelphia hospital. Silverman has been treated and released.

Yeadon Police Chief Donald Molineux says he believes the doctor's actions "saved lives.''
