(West Hanover Township) -- A state trooper is in stable condition after being shot by a man who confronted him during a hit and run investigation in West Hanover Township, Dauphin County.

The suspect is undergoing surgery at a hospital.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. yesterday after the trooper went to the 7600 block of Greenhill Road about a hit and run.

Police say the trooper was given the location of a vehicle suspected in the incident and went to a house to investigate.

Authorities say a 49-year-old man confronted the trooper and opened fire, striking the trooper multiple times.

The trooper returned fire and injured the suspect, who surrendered after state police and municipal police officers from several townships surrounded the area.

The suspect was undergoing surgery early this morning
