(Chambersburg) -- Chambersburg's fire chief plans to retire later this summer.

Chief William FitzGerald is stepping down, effective August 5, after nearly five years on the job in the Franklin County community.

In his letter of resignation, he said he believes it's time to return to private life and spend time with his family.

FitzGerald previously worked as a consultant and with the Washington D.C. Fire Department.

The borough manager says council members will discuss how to fill the vacancy over the next few weeks.
