(Harrisburg) -- A proposal to require Pennsylvania schools to conduct more thorough background checks of their workers and contractors is closer to becoming law after passage in the state House.
The House voted unanimously today to send the Senate the bill that pertains to anyone who might have direct contact with children. Supporters say it will help districts avoid hiring someone who abused children in another district.
Current law doesn't require schools to perform such a thorough job history investigation of applicants, and it doesn't mandate that schools give comprehensive answers when asked about a former employee.
The bill would provide immunity from civil and criminal liability for people who provide the background information. Schools also couldn't enter into a confidentiality agreement over findings or allegations of abuse.
