(Harrisburg) -- A candidate backed by the Republican Party establishment who lost a state Senate seat to a write-in candidate is dropping out of the race for a full Senate term.

State Representative Ron Miller, an eighth-term state representative from York County, had his name removed from the May 20 primary ballot today.

Miller and a Democratic candidate were handily defeated in a March 18 special election by trash company president Scott Wagner, whose write-in campaign won nearly half the votes.

The Senate Republican Campaign Committee and Wagner's campaign exchanged sharply negative TV ads during the weeks-long campaign.

Wagner will complete the term of former Sen. Mike Waugh, which ends Nov. 30. Wagner faces competition in the primary and the Nov. 4 general election to determine who'll serve the next four-year term.
