(Harrisburg) -- The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is about to begin its annual pre-season trout stocking ritual.

Executive Director John Arway says anglers are welcome to participate. "It's a spectator sport and a participation sport," he explains.

"You can either come out and watch and see your favorite stream stocked, or you and your grandson or granddaughter, daughter or son, can actually pitch in and carry a bucket of fish down to the stream and stock them yourself."

An estimated 3.2 million fish are slated to be stocked in more than 850 lakes and streams, beginning March 1st.

More than half will be in the water before opening day. March 29th is the opening day in southeastern Pennsylvania, an 18-county region that includes much of the midstate.

The statewide opening day is set for April 12th.
