(Penns Choice) -- Art Halvorson, a 29-year active duty veteran of the Coast Guard, says he's planning to challenge U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, for the Republican nomination in Pennsylvania's 9th Congressional District.

Shuster, of Hollidaysburg, is running for his sixth two-year term for the seat his father, Elmer ``Bud'' Shuster, held from 1973 to 2001.

The 9th District includes Bedford County, where Halvorson lives in the borough of Penns Choice, along with Blair, Fayette, Fulton, Franklin and Indiana counties, and parts of Cambria, Greene, Huntingdon, Somerset and Washington counties.

Halvorson is a political newcomer. He graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and remained in the service, helping to reorganize the Coast Guard and being part of a team that created the U.S. Department of Homeland Security after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Shuster currently chairs the House Transportation Committee.
