(Harrisburg) -- Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Tom Wolf says he'll donate cash to food banks instead of hosting one of the many receptions surrounding the upcoming Pennsylvania Society dinner in New York City.

In a letter to supporters, the wealthy York resident said he plans to contribute $5,000 apiece to food banks in Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

Wolf says his decision underscores the fact that he is a different kind of candidate -- a businessman who has not previously run for public office.

The former state revenue secretary says he hopes this approach will help unite all Pennsylvania families in friendship.

The black-tie dinner at Manhattan's Waldorf Astoria, one of the premier gatherings for Pennsylvania politicos, is December 14th. Wolf and his wife plan to attend.
