(Shamokin) -- A fast-moving blaze in Northumberland County has claimed the life of a young girl who was trapped in her home.

The fire started around 11:00 a.m. today in Shamokin and spread to five houses before it could be extinguished.

Police Chief Edward Griffiths says a 12-year-old girl died in the blaze. Griffiths said the girl's family was able to escape but she was trapped in the attic.

The names of the victim and her family were not immediately released.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the blaze. It appears to have started in the house where the girl died and then spread to homes on either side.
