(Hollidaysburg) -- A Republican lawmaker from central Pennsylvania is calling it quits after a long career in the state House.

Blair County state Representative Jerry Stern says he won't run for re-election next year. Stern, of Martinsburg, Blair County, is in his 22nd year in the General Assembly.

Stern says he's on the waiting list for a liver transplant, but also isn't running because of the changing atmosphere in politics that puts too much emphasis on political fundraising.

He says he'll meet soon with his transplant doctors at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Dauphin County. His liver is failing because it's saturated with iron caused by a form of anemia. Stern is 58.
