Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray has won a third term by defeating the ex-mayor he ousted eight years ago.

The 68-year-old Gray, a Democrat, was opposed by Republican former Mayor Charlie Smithgall, whose own bid for a third term ended in a loss to Gray in 2005.

Voters opted Tuesday to keep Gray in office.

In a recent debate, the 68-year-old Smithgall charged that Gray has increased taxes and debt, while cutting back on police protection.

Gray said he had to make difficult choices to keep the city on solid financial footing.

Gray's campaign received fundraising help from former Gov. Ed Rendell.
