John Kirkpatrick, a longtime top executive at The Patriot-News in Harrisburg and its online counterpart PennLive, is taking a new job with Lancaster Newspapers Inc.

Kirkpatrick is taking over as president of the Lancaster company.

He joined The Patriot-News in 1991 after working at the San Francisco Examiner. Kirkpatrick was named publisher in 1997 and given the additional title of president in 2001.

In January, he was named president of the newly formed PA Media Group, overseeing PennLive, The Patriot-News and the company's other publications.
It was a timen when the Patriot cut back publication of the paper to three days a week.

Under Kirkpatrick's leadership, the Patriot-News won numerous awards, including the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting.
