(Harrisburg) -- A recent meeting of top legislative leaders is creating new hope for passage of a bill to fund transportation projects in Pennsylvania.

Negotiators said Tuesday that a meeting among leaders of both parties in the House and Senate on Monday gave fresh momentum to the effort to pay for highways, bridges and mass transit.

Dave Thomas, an aide to Republican House Speaker Sam Smith, says the current plan is to work on a proposal that would be a mixture of the $2.5 billion-a-year bill that passed the state Senate in June and a less costly approach under consideration in the House.

House Democratic Leader Frank Dermody says leaders are talking and working together.

Thomas says House Republicans no longer consider Wednesday their deadline, and are working toward November votes.
