(Carlisle) -- A military historical museum in central Pennsylvania has been named an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

The Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle said Wednesday that it's the first U.S. Army museum or historical organization to join the select group of museums and cultural institutions.

Smithsonian Affiliation offers museums, educational and cultural organizations the opportunity to have access to Smithsonian collections and resources.

Harold Closter, director of Smithsonian Affiliates, says the center became an affiliate of the institution because it has been operating at the highest standard of the museum profession.

Since 1996, Smithsonian Affiliations has established partnerships with more than 180 museums and cultural institutions in 43 states, Puerto Rico and Panama.
