(Harrisburg) -- State Treasurer Rob McCord is running for governor.

In an e-mail to supporters, McCord confirms the open secret that he will compete for the Democratic nomination to contest Republican Governor Tom Corbett's bid for a second term.

He's the eighth candidate to step forward -- and he may not be the last. He has scheduled announcements today at Montgomery County Community College and an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers facility in Pittsburgh.

McCord, a former venture capitalist who was re-elected as treasurer last year, says he's running because he wants to invest in Pennsylvania families and provide opportunities for young people.

Other candidates include Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, former state revenue secretary Tom Wolf and former state environmental protection secretaries Katie McGinty and John Hanger.
