(Harrisburg) -- A caucus spokesman says the chairman of the Transportation Committee in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives is in critical condition after complications arose following a leg operation.

House Republican caucus spokesman Steve Miskin said Bedford County Representative Dick Hess' medical condition took a downturn over the weekend.

Miskin said Hess had a leg operation about two weeks ago, and the issues arose during his recovery.

The 74-year-old Hess has been a state representative for 14 terms. As majority chairman of the House Transportation Committee, he has been a key player in negotiations over a proposal to raise billions of dollars for roads, bridges and mass transit.

Miskin said Hess' family provided his medical status to his district legislative staff.
