(Pottsville) -- A private social club in Pottsville is closing after 125 years.

The Pottsville Club said in a notice sent to its board of managers that it will close October 31st.

The private club and restaurant opened in 1888. It has been battling dwindling membership and financial troubles for years.

The bank holding its mortgage filed a lawsuit in Schuylkill County Court on Monday alleging the club is delinquent in its mortgage payments and real estate taxes.

It has about 200 members.

Club officials say it has lost about 500 members since 1998. The board of managers is planning to meet October 3rd at the club on to vote on turning over the property to the bank.
