Memorial being held for former Governor William Scranton

(Scranton) -- Former Pennsylvania Governor and Republican presidential candidate William Warren Scranton is being remembered as a selfless public servant who focused his energy and ambition on improving the lives of others.

Pennsylvania's political elite turned out today to pay respects to Scranton, who was elected as Pennsylvania's 38th governor in 1962 and served a single term. He died last month at age 96.

Governor Corbett and several former Pennsylvania governors are among the mourners gathered in the city named after Scranton's family. Corbett says it's a day to celebrate Scranton's public service and commitment to Pennsylvania and the nation.

Scranton served a term in Congress and lost the GOP presidential nomination in 1964 to Sen. Barry Goldwater.

(Harrisburg) -- Pennsylvania's political elite are turning out to pay respects to former Pennsylvania Governor and Republican presidential candidate William Warren Scranton.

Governor Corbett and several former Pennsylvania governors are among the mourners gathering today at a memorial service for Scranton, who was elected as Pennsylvania's 38th governor in 1962 and served a single term. He died last month at age 96.

Scranton also served one term in Congress. He lost the GOP presidential nomination in 1964 as a liberal alternative to conservative Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater.

Corbett says it's a day to celebrate Scranton's public service and commitment to Pennsylvania and the nation.

Scranton was appointed United Nations ambassador in 1976 by President Gerald Ford and served about 10 months in the post.

Scranton and his wife had four children. Their eldest son, Bill Scranton, is a former lieutenant governor and two-time gubernatorial candidate.
