(Annville) -- Lebanon Valley College says it is receiving the largest gift in its 147-year history.

The Lebanon County college says the late Doctor John Bowman Allwein, a 1956 graduate, named his alma mater as the sole benefactor of his estimated $5 million estate.

The oral surgeon and 20-year Army veteran died April 13th in St. Petersburg, Florida, at the age of 78.

College president Lewis Thayne says the gift will increase the value of the school's endowment by more than 10 percent.  He says it will, among other things, make a LVC education more accessible for students from area high schools.
