Lawmaker calls for investigation into assault at state prison

(Bellefonte) -- A legislator is asking for a formal state investigation into the sexual assault of a female staff member at a prison in central Pennsylvania.

State police say the woman was knocked unconscious during the attack last week at the State Correctional Institution-Rockview.

Officials say she was taken by ambulance to a hospital and later released.

Republican state Rep. Kerry Benninghoff wrote in a letter Wednesday to Gov. Tom Corbett that a formal investigation is needed to protect workers at the prison after a series of attacks.

Benninghoff says there was obviously a breakdown in procedures in the latest one.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Susan McNaughton says the department is conducting its own investigation.
