(Harrisburg) -- A 12-year veteran of Pennsylvania Superior Court is now the appeals court's newest president judge.

Members of the mid-level appellate panel have elected John Bender unanimously during a session in Harrisburg.

Bender is assuming the post held most recently by Correale Stevens, who was appointed to a vacancy on the state Supreme Court on July 30.

The position entails supervision of the court's budget, spending, personnel, scheduling and case management.

Bender is a graduate of Penn State and Duquesne School of Law. He's been a magisterial district judge, a private-practice lawyer and an Allegheny County prosecutor.

He'll serve as president judge until an election in January 2014.
