(Reading) -- The embattled chief of the Reading Fire Department has resigned after one year on the job.

David Hollinger submitted his letter of resignation to Mayor Vaughn Spencer today.

It's not clear what prompted Hollinger to quit, but the chief has been heavily criticized by the department rank-and-file over a number of issues. The firefighters' union issued a vote of no confidence in March.

Hollinger is a Reading native. He spent more than 25 years with the Washington, D.C., fire department before returning to Reading to take the chief's job.
