(York) -- A block of homes had to be evacuated in York after crews doing street work hit a gas line.

York Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Rose says firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 7:00 a.m. this morning after an employee cutting trenches for the project hit the gas line. He says workers smelled gas and could hear the leak.

About 15 homes and some businesses have been affected.

Columbia Gas crews were on the scene working to repair the leak and it wasn't immediately clear how long the evacuations would remain in effect.
