(York) -- A midstate company is at work replicating the giant flag that inspired the U.S. national anthem.

The Maryland Historical Society has commissioned the Star Spangled Banner replica for an upcoming Defender's Day celebration at Fort McHenry.

The historical society is calling on volunteers to help weave the 30-foot by 42-foot replica during the same week the original was woven 200 years ago by Mary Pickersgill. Family Heirloom Weavers in York, Pa., which has created replicas for many historical sites and the movie ``Lincoln,'' is overseeing the project.

Volunteers can sign up for public sewing days Aug. 3 and 11. The Defender's Day celebration will be on Sept. 14.
