An outdoor Mass commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg will be offered on Saturday, July 6th at 7 p.m. The celebrant and homilist will be His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York. The Mass will be held at the new parish center of St. Francis Xavier Church, 455 Table Rock Road, Gettysburg, Pa.

St. Francis Xavier Parish has a long tradition of involvement with the Battle of Gettysburg. The parish church served as a hospital site during the battle. Stained glass windows in the church at 25 West High Street, Gettysburg, depict scenes of the wounded soldiers being cared for by Catholic nuns. The celebration of an outdoor field Mass has been a tradition for the parish. For the 100th anniversary Bishop George Leech of the Diocese of Harrisburg celebrated Mass as did then Bishop Keeler of the Harrisburg Diocese for the 125th Anniversary of the battle.

The invitation was extended to Cardinal Dolan because of his love of history. The Cardinal is the current President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.  A 100 voice choir is planned for the event.
