Schuylkill County teacher hires helicopter for science experiment

(Pottsville) -- A midstate middle school teacher has gone to great heights to show her students the value of physics and engineering.

D.H.H. Lengel Middle School teacher Lisa Giacomelli hired a helicopter and hopped in the passenger seat.

As it hovered 130 feet over the school in Pottsville, she dropped egg carriers -- with their fragile cargo inside -- down to the ground below Thursday.

Of the 28 cushioned packages she dropped, nine landed unbroken as the students looked on.

It's the fifth year she has done egg-drop experiments as part of the eighth-grade science class.

But in previous years, she just took the class to the school roof.

This year, she contacted a local company, which donated the services of its helicopter.
