(Lewistown) -- Four people are facing animal cruelty charges after police say two men were repeatedly dropping several small puppies from a Mifflin County bridge.

A witness reported seeing the puppies being dropped 25 feet into a river from the bridge in Lewistown. Authorities responded and police say the dogs, German shepherd mix puppies, were taken away.

Investigators say 22-year-old Cody Ritter of Lewistown and 20-year-old Dustin Fetters of Burnham have been charged with animal cruelty.

Police say two Lewistown women who own the dogs, 23-year-old Karissa Walters, and 20-year-old Shawnee Strawser, were allowing the men to abuse the animals. They are also charged with animal cruelty.
