(Hershey) -- The treasurer of a Dauphin County volunteer fire department has been charged with stealing more than $129,000 from the agency since shortly after he was elected treasurer last year.

Online court records don't list an attorney for 30-year-old Thaddeus Austin, of Hershey, who was sent to the Dauphin County Prison after he couldn't post $60,000 after his arraignment on theft charges.

Police say Austin began stealing money soon after he was elected treasurer of the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department in January 2012 and  wrote department checks to himself, opened a personal debit card account and even received personal benefits from some vendors that worked with the department.

Police say Austin paid off personal debts and opened new credit accounts for himself, too.

The department says it is insured for the loss.
