(Shanksville) -- Governor Corbett and his wife have joined volunteers who are planting thousands of trees at the Flight 93 National Memorial in southwestern Pennsylvania.
The governor's office says Corbett and First Lady Susan Corbett laid flowers at the memorial wall before today's event in honor of 33 passengers and seven crew members killed during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist hijacking.
The governor said he wanted to honor "the futures they assured for countless citizens by planting the first seeds of resistance to assure our nation's freedom.''
Yesterday, about 160 volunteers took part in the first day of planting in Shanksville, Somerset County. Officials say about 15,000 trees will be planted on 23 acres this year toward a goal of planting more than 150,000 trees at the site about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
