(Harrisburg) -- Pennsylvanians may soon be able to register to vote online.
A measure to establish online voter registration in the commonwealth has cleared the state Senate Government Committee with bipartisan support.
Andy Hoover, legislative director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, says the move would help potential voters who wait until the last minute to register. "So, if the voter registration deadline comes up, and you're in a hurry to get your registration done, you can do it from the convenience of your home."
Hoover says making it easier for people to register to vote would also increase access to voting.
At least 13 other states already have online voter registration systems.
Pennsylvanians would still be able to register to vote by filing paper applications.
The proposal, sponsored by Lancaster County Republican Lloyd Smucker, will now move to the full Senate floor.
