Family: Only inmate to blame for guard's death

(Nanticoke) -- The family of a corrections officer who was slain at a federal prison in northeastern Pennsylvania is urging his co-workers not to blame themselves.

Authorities say Eric Williams was working in a housing unit when an inmate using a homemade weapon attacked him last week at the Canaan penitentiary in Waymart, about 20 miles northeast of Scranton.

Williams' father, Donald, on Tuesday released a statement directed to the corrections officers at the prison.

He says the family doesn't blame anybody for his son's death except the assailant who attacked him.

Donald Williams says he released the statement after prison officials told him one of his son's co-workers had committed suicide.

Officials have confirmed that an officer at the prison committed suicide.
