(Pittsburgh) -- The former controller of a Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling firm is facing federal charges in an ongoing investigation of more than $5.4 million that was allegedly embezzled from the western Pennsylvania business.

She's identified in court papers as Cheryl Brooks. Defense attorney Patrick Nightingale says he's been in negotiations with prosecutors and expects a plea agreement.

Dan Donahue, the owner of Falcon Drilling LLC in Indiana, Pa., says the company is looking forward to putting the event behind them.

In February the chief operating officer of the company, Larry Winckler, of Indiana, was charged with embezzling nearly $1 million.

State police charged Winckler based on information provided by Brooks. The state charges against Winckler were dropped so federal prosecutors could take over the case.
