PHRC commissioner resigns over Reading job flap

(Reading) -- A member of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission has resigned after the agency found out he applied for a job as an equity coordinator in the Reading School District.

The PHRC says commissioner Ismael Arcelay, of Bethlehem, resigned ``with great regret at having compromised the commission's partnership with the district.''

The PHRC has been working with the district on efforts to accommodate a student population that is 76 percent Hispanic or Latino. Among other things, the PHRC required the district to hire an equity coordinator _ but the school board tabled that when a school director complained that PHRC members had applied for the job.

The PHRC says the Reading Eagle reported the controversy on Thursday, which prompted the PHRC's statement and Arcelay's resignation Friday.
