HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania utility companies are reporting that over 241,000 people are without power throughout the state, as the number of outages continues to rise rapidly.
At 7 p.m. Monday, Peco in southeastern Pennsylvania was reporting 90,000. FirstEnergy was reporting about 77,000 customers without power, including 16,000 in sparsely populated Pike County and 8,400 in York County. PPL was reporting about 74,000.
The utilities have lined up extra repair crews and some are still out working, but utility officials say some people could be without power for days as crews take shelter while the worst of Hurricane Sandy passes.
Larger numbers of people are already without power in New Jersey.
