Corbett aide rebukes Justice Deptartment over voter ID law

(Harrisburg) -- The administration of Governor Corbett is suggesting a U.S. Department of Justice inquiry into Pennsylvania's tough, new voter identification law is politically motivated and outside of its authority.

In any case, the letter by Corbett's top lawyer, James Schultz, dated Friday, cites court decisions that he says back up the law's constitutionality.

The Corbett administration also appears unwilling to compile and send a long list of information about the law, as requested by the Department of Justice in a July 23 letter.

Rather, Schultz offers to share all of the documents the state produced to defend a pending legal challenge in the state's courts, provided that department lawyers sign the same confidentiality agreements as lawyers who mounted the legal challenge.
