Unveiling of Winters memorial set for D-Day 2012

(South Lebanon Township) -- A monument honoring a midstate World War two veteran is closer to being built, with the help of a Lebanon County boy. For Jordan Brown, a 5th grader at South Lebanon Elementary School, Major Dick Winters, the leader of the so-called Band of Brothers, is his hero. Thanks in part to Brown's fundraising efforts, a statue depicting Winters is expected to be dedicated on June 6th 2012 in Normandy, the anniversary of D-Day. Brown says when he heard that a documentary filmmaker had launched the project, he got involved right away. "People say that, on the news sometimes you hear, like, adults can do this but kids can't. We'll, kind of like, I'll prove you wrong," he says. Brown has been selling olive green wristbands bearing Winter's famous motto "Hang Tough" to raise funds for the monument. He says he's raised about $23,000 and sold about 11,000 wristbands. Brown's goal is to raise about a quarter of the project's $400,000 pricetag. More details can be found here.
